Managing Orthodontic Emergencies: What to Do When Something Goes Wrong
Orthodontic emergencies are rarely true emergencies in the medical sense but they can be uncomfortable and stressful, especially if they happen at night or on a weekend. At Tangelo Orthodontics in Muskogee, we want every patient to feel equipped and confident handling common issues when they arise. Here’s your guide to the most frequent orthodontic hiccups and what to do about them.
Popped or Loose Bracket
Brackets can come loose if you bite into something hard or sticky. If the bracket is still attached to the wire, leave it in place and cover any rough edges with orthodontic wax (we’ll send you home with some when you get your braces). If the bracket has completely come off the tooth, save it in a small bag and call our office. Loose brackets generally don’t require emergency same-day visits, but you should let us know so we can schedule a repair.
Poking or Loose Wire
A wire that shifts out of place or sticks out at the back can poke your cheek or gum and cause significant irritation. First, try gently pushing the wire back into place with a pencil eraser or a cotton swab. Cover the end with orthodontic wax if it’s still poking. If the wire is long enough that you can reach it safely, a small pair of nail scissors can trim it but never try to cut the main archwire. Call our Muskogee office for guidance.
Soreness After Adjustments
General soreness after getting braces put on or after adjustment appointments is very normal and typically peaks about 24–48 hours later. Soft foods, over-the-counter pain relief, and warm saltwater rinses can all help. This isn’t an emergency, it’s just your teeth responding to movement.
Lost Aligner Tray (Invisalign)
If you lose an Invisalign aligner, don’t panic. Try wearing the previous tray to hold your teeth in position and call us right away. Depending on where you are in your treatment, we’ll advise whether to move on to the next tray, order a replacement, or come in for an appointment.
True Dental Emergencies
If you experience a tooth knocked completely out, severe facial pain, swelling, or an injury affecting your jaw or face, go to an emergency room or call a dental emergency line immediately. These situations go beyond orthodontic care.
