How Long Does Orthodontic Treatment Really Take?
‘How long will I have to wear braces?’ is one of the first questions patients ask at Tangelo Orthodontics and it’s a great one. The honest answer: it depends. But understanding the factors involved can help set realistic expectations and keep you motivated throughout your journey to a straighter smile in Jenks.
The Average Treatment Timeline
Most orthodontic patients wear braces or use aligner trays for somewhere between 12 and 24 months. Simple cases involving minor crowding or spacing issues may be resolved in as little as 6 to 12 months. Complex bite corrections or severe misalignment may take 24 to 30 months or longer. Your orthodontist at Tangelo will give you a personalized estimate during your first consultation.
Factors That Affect Treatment Length
The complexity of your case is the biggest driver of treatment time. Other important factors include your age (younger patients often respond faster because their bones are still developing), the type of treatment you choose, how diligently you follow care instructions, and how consistently you attend your adjustment appointments. For Invisalign patients, wearing your trays the recommended 20–22 hours per day is essential to staying on schedule.
What Happens During Treatment
Throughout your treatment, you’ll visit Tangelo Orthodontics every 6 to 10 weeks for adjustments. At each visit, your orthodontist checks your progress, makes any necessary tweaks to your braces or gives you the next set of aligner trays, and answers any questions you have. These appointments are quick, usually 20 to 30 minutes but they’re crucial to keeping your treatment on track.
The Retention Phase
Once your braces come off or you complete your final aligner tray, your treatment isn’t quite done. You’ll enter the retention phase, where you’ll wear a retainer to hold your teeth in their new positions while the surrounding bone settles. This is a critical step that many patients underestimate. Skipping your retainer is the most common reason teeth shift after orthodontic treatment.
Good News: Time Flies
Most of our patients tell us the treatment time went by faster than they expected. Between the excitement of seeing progress at each appointment and the support of our team, the journey is genuinely enjoyable and the destination is absolutely worth it.
