What to Expect at Your First Orthodontic Consultation

If you’ve never been to an orthodontist before, it’s completely natural to wonder what you’re actually walking into. Will they start treatment that same day? Is it going to be uncomfortable? What are they even looking for? These are questions we hear all the time at Tangelo Orthodontics, and the answer to most of them is a lot more reassuring than people expect.

Your first consultation is not a treatment appointment. It’s a conversation and a chance for Dr. Hall, Dr. Choe, and Dr. Frazee to get to know you, understand your goals, and take a thorough look at what’s going on with your teeth and bite. Most patients leave surprised by how low-key and informative the whole thing is. Here’s a full rundown of what to expect.

A Little Preparation Goes a Long Way

You don’t need to do much to get ready for your first visit, but a little preparation makes the appointment more productive for everyone.

If you’ve had dental X-rays taken recently by your general dentist, it’s worth asking them to forward those records or bringing copies with you. We’ll likely take our own diagnostic images as well, but having a recent set on hand gives Dr. Hall, Dr. Choe, and Dr. Frazee useful context right from the start.

It also helps to come in with your concerns already in mind. Maybe your teeth have been crowding for years and it’s finally bothering you enough to do something about it. Maybe your child’s dentist flagged a bite issue at their last checkup. Or maybe you just want a professional opinion on something you’ve noticed. Whatever brought you in, being able to put it into words helps us understand what matters to you, not just what we observe on our own.

From the Moment You Arrive

Walking into our Tulsa, OK office, you’ll notice right away that this doesn’t feel like a stressful medical environment. Our team makes a point of greeting every patient warmly and making sure you feel comfortable before anything else happens.

You’ll take care of a brief health history form if it wasn’t completed ahead of time online, and then you’ll be brought back to meet with one of our doctors. From that point forward, the visit is about listening, examining, and explaining.

The Clinical Examination

Once you’re with Dr. Hall, Dr. Choe, or Dr. Frazee, they’ll conduct a thorough evaluation of your teeth, jaw, and bite. This is a careful, methodical process, but it’s completely comfortable from the patient’s perspective.

The doctor will look at how your upper and lower teeth fit together, whether there’s crowding, spacing, or gaps that need to be addressed, and how your jaw is aligned. For younger patients, they’ll also assess how the permanent teeth are coming in and whether there are any developmental concerns worth getting ahead of early.

Beyond the visual exam, we’ll gather diagnostic records during this first visit. That includes X-rays and clinical photographs, and in many cases digital impressions or scans of your teeth. These records aren’t just routine, they’re the foundation that allows Dr. Hall, Dr. Choe, and Dr. Frazee to design a treatment plan that’s built specifically around your anatomy, not a generic template.

Talking Through Timeline and Cost

Two questions come up in nearly every first consultation, and we make sure to address both of them directly: how long will this take, and what is it going to cost?

After reviewing your case, our team will give you a realistic estimate of your treatment timeline. Every patient’s situation is different, so there’s no single answer but you’ll leave with a clear sense of what the process will look like and how long you can expect to be in treatment.

On the financial side, our front office team will review the full cost of your recommended treatment, explain your payment options, and help you understand how your insurance coverage applies if you have it. We work with most major insurance plans and offer flexible monthly payment plans, because a great smile should be accessible to everyone — not just those who can pay for it all at once. We’ll answer every question until everything is completely clear.
