What Is a Palate Expander and Does My Child Need One?
If Dr. Hall, Dr. Choe, or Dr. Frazee at Tangelo Orthodontics has recommended a palate expander for your child, you probably have questions. What is it? Does it hurt? How long does it need to stay in? These are all great questions, and we’re here to walk you through everything you need to know.
What Is a Palate Expander?
A palate expander (also called an orthodontic expander) is a device used to widen the upper jaw specifically the palate (the roof of the mouth). The upper jaw is actually made of two bones that don’t fully fuse together until the mid-to-late teenage years. Before that happens, a gentle and gradual expansion of the palate is possible using this appliance.
Why Would My Child Need One?
The most common reasons we recommend palate expanders include crossbites (where the upper teeth bite inside the lower teeth rather than outside), crowding (not enough room for all permanent teeth to come in), and narrow upper jaws that affect breathing or bite function. In many cases, expanding the palate during childhood eliminates the need for tooth extractions or more complex treatment later.
How Does It Work?
A palate expander is cemented to the upper back teeth. Most expanders have a small screw in the center that a parent activates with a tiny key usually once a day or every other day, as prescribed. Each turn creates a tiny amount of tension that slowly separates the two palate bones, stimulating new bone to fill in the gap. The process is gradual and controlled.
Does It Hurt?
Most children feel some pressure after each adjustment turn, but true pain is uncommon. The sensation typically passes within a few minutes. You may also notice a small gap forming between your child’s front teeth as the jaw widens, this is completely normal and closes on its own once expansion is complete.
How Long Does Treatment Take?
Active expansion typically takes 3 to 6 months, followed by a period of retention where the expander remains in place while new bone solidifies. Total treatment with the appliance in place is usually 9 to 12 months.
